This is a review of our 39th shipment from Home Chef. Two of the three recipes were low calorie and gluten free. We rated one recipe four out of five stars and two recipes three stars. We have now made 152 of their recipes over the last ten months. See photos of all of them on my Home Chef Pinterest Board.

Sriracha Shrimp & Avocado Salad with Crisp Romaine & Ginger Mayo Dressing

This recipe indicated that it would take twenty-five minutes to prepare, but it took longer. It's a low carb, low calorie and gluten free recipe that has 459 calories. We gave it three out of five stars since not all of the shrimp arrived in good shape and we really disliked the salad dressing. The shrimp seasoning was really good. Note that in the recipe results photo above it features shrimp from Costco. We had to throw out the Home Chef shrimp. I usually skip any seafood recipes as soon as the weather gets warm, but I didn't manage to do so since we've had warmer temps than normal lately. Normal temps are around 60 and it's been in the mid to high 70's. We had some salad leftovers, so it was a generous portion of food except for the shrimp, we always like much more as you can tell by how many we made for this dish. Thankfully, we had some Sriracha on hand because they didn't send us enough. We would have liked more mayo and ginger also. The avocado wasn't very ripe, so it lacked flavor.

Banh Mi Meatball Sub with Pork Meatballs, Pickled Vegetables, Fresno Pepper & Fresh Cilantro

This was an unusual recipe for sure, so I had to give it a try. Hubby gave it four out of five stars and I gave it three. The meatballs featured on the recipe's photo were much larger than those we made. They have been sending us less meat lately which is disappointing. I didn't eat half of the roll because the flavor of the meatballs would have been quite limited by all that bread. One would think placing carrots and cucumbers on their sub would be quite strange, but it was actually tasty. The Fresno chili was also a nice addition. We skipped the pickling process since my stomach can't handle any pickled foods. This recipe indicated twenty-five minutes for preparation, but as usual it took longer. It had 728 calories.

Sirloin Steak with Red Pepper Steak Sauce with Roasted Red Potatoes & Green Beans

We both gave this recipe three out of five stars since the steak was tough and chewy and the sauce was a bit strange. We both enjoyed the green beans and potatoes. The seasoning of olive oil, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper was delicious. The roasted red potatoes were almost like hash browns after being cut up so small and roasted with olive oil. This one had 590 calories and it's a low calorie and gluten free recipe.

I didn't order any chicken this week since Home Chef has been having issues with it for the last couple of months. We are taking a break from Home Chef since we haven't been enjoying the longer cooking times, smaller portions of protein and finding bones in the "boneless" chicken. If I see reviews that show changes back to the way they were, we will return. Finally they are going to ship to the west coast this spring, so if you live in the west and have been anxiously awaiting to try Home Chef, get ready! We went back to ordering from Hello Fresh and we received our shipment a day early, this is what arrived today:
  1. Salmon en Papillote
  2. Lasagna Penne Bake
  3. Lemony Pan Seared Chicken
So stay tuned for that review. I recently did a comparison of Home Chef, Plated, Blue Apron & Hello Fresh, so be sure to check out that post before you leave.
